Genres

Comments

Genres are defined as recurring situations and contexts.

Procedures are one type of genre and they have more/less fixed design. You can look at a page and identify it as a procedure, rather than a informational document.

Some of the recipe blogs are difficult because of their design violates what we want from a recipe, which is a short how-to. Likewise, reports have expectations. If you use your fiction writing style in a technical report, your manager will not be happy.

Macro features

Comments

Genre is defined by the macro features, not the micro features.

Every set of instructions are not identical in format, yet they all contain a collections of certain high-level features. Those are the macro features and are what enables you to classify a document as an instruction and not a something else.

Genre and audience analysis

Comments

Genre analysis fits into the audience analysis.

The audience expectation for a genre have a major influence on if their first glance interpretation is correct. Your job as a writer is to make sure that interpretation works.

Remember how a majority of business say that low communication skills are their major problem and how too many college graduates can't write. It's not really a lack of writing skills, but a lack of using those writing skills to create a text that fits the genre conventions..

Audience analysis

You've read this already as part of the audience unit. But look it over again with a view of how genre and audience intersect.

Genre in digital documents

Comments

A web document is not a genre. That is comparable to saying "a book" is a genre, which means cookbooks, biographies, fiction, and a physic textbook are all the same genre.

Actually, in the next reading, you'll find that a web page contains multiple genres.

Genre analysis summary

Comments

Slide show on genre analysis. More concise explanation of different genres.

Don't try and skip previous (longer) readings and just read this one. This presentation makes for a good summary, but will make little sense without some background understanding.

Web page genres

Comments

We could say genre web page= genre which implies book=genre. Most of us would consider book=genre as clearly absurd; there are many types of books. Yet, when thinking about web pages, while the idea is just as absurd, most miss that connection.

Hailey argued that the Internet is composed of hundreds of genres we don’t notice and so never recognize. I have argued that, in contrast to traditional (analog) media, within digital media a single page may contain a score or more different genres. The problem seems to be that writers of digital media have difficulty identifying the genres they are using and an even harder time recognizing when they should be changing genres mid-page.

The first few paragraphs will probably be difficult for you to understand, but then he gets into the study where he asked people to identify the genres on a web page. That is the part you need to pay attention to.
